　　在最初，天工大陆十分的寒冷、广大而又空无。万灵的祖先们在赤道周围的地域游荡，完全不懂得语言或是文明。但是后来，一群异世界的旅人拜访了这个世界。他们是一个古老又深不可测的族群，他们强大的力量是超乎想象的。他们掌握了各种领域的知识，基于只有他们自己知道的神秘的理由，他们将文明这件礼物给予了精灵和矮人共同的祖先，巨魔。

　　几千年后，恐怖的灾害摧毁了巨魔们建立起来的秩序。一扇通往黑暗次元的大门被打开了，在那居住的是巨魔智者们难以言喻的生物。

　　唯一在大崩坏中幸存下来的只有被巨魔们当成是奴隶与仆人的生物。其中包括了当做仆人总管的人类的祖先，魔族。魔族保存了来自巨魔族的遗产，并带着对过往的怀念建立起了属于他们自己的神庙城市。

　　当异次元大门崩坏后，整个世界落满了各种各样的恐怖生物。魔族就只能靠他们自己，尽全力的抵抗这些恐怖生物。魔族通过巨魔的基因创造出了矮人和精灵两个种族。随着魔族因为和恐怖生物的战斗而最终变得衰弱，精灵与矮人逐渐崛起，这两个古老的种族最终一起统治了整个天工大陆。精灵与矮人频繁的相互贸易，整个大陆变得繁华而富庶，和平的气氛笼罩着世界。精灵与矮人都在这一时期建立了巨大的城市与不可思议的建筑。他们的人口与日俱增而人民也非常富裕。但是这一段黄金时期终于因一场苦难的战争而结束。

　　在精灵的国度至高之庭里，一场大悲剧分化了精灵皇室成员之间原有的统一。伟大的初代精灵王之子，受诅咒的耶利丹一直都在计划要篡取奥萨的王位。他秘密的转而信奉黑暗的力量，而许多的精灵都跟随着他一起堕落。在一连串的秘密行动中他谋杀了所有最优秀也最贤明的精灵王子们，想因此而获得完全的权利。但所有忠诚于精灵族荣耀的精灵们选择了征服者拜伦作为他们的新国王。因此马上两方人马就开始了战争。精灵一族最终无可避免的分为了跟随堕落者耶利丹的一方与效忠于征服者拜伦的一方。

　　这场战争非常惨烈而且势均力敌，但最后的胜利者是征服者拜伦，而耶利丹与他的跟随者被逐出了精灵国度至高之庭。他们撤退流亡到泰伦平原北部的地域，在这荒凉而不友善的海岸上，他们建立了一个新的国度并命名为巫师城。由此，他们频繁的对他们没有堕落的同伴宣战，如今他们被称为堕落精灵，天工大陆上最邪恶的住民。他们仍然由古老的堕落者耶利丹统领着，他通过黑暗的力量与被牺牲的无辜灵魂不断的延续生命，并一直活着，一直活着。

　　耶利丹让自己手下的堕落精灵假扮成他们没有堕落的同伴，并发起了对矮人的旅行商队的袭击，因而造成了精灵和爱人的敌对的开始。两方很快的就在各自结集军队。两个原本高尚而勇武的种族花了一整个时代来互相兴战，并最终几乎完全的耗尽了各自的军事力量。这场战争被称为割袍之战，并最终造成了两个种族之间的剧烈冲突与不可抹去的疤痕。最后，精灵族招回他们的兵力去转战再度兴起的暗黑精灵。当精灵族放弃了在红石平原的殖民地时，有些精灵撤退到了了无人迹的洛伦森林中，这些便是后来的森之精灵的祖先。

　　在割袍之战后，地震频繁的发生，许多古老的火山开始爆发，矮人所建立的堡垒被不断地吞噬，矿坑也被岩浆与洪水所淹没。永恒的矮人国度被完全的摧毁，大部分的城塞与城市都被大地吞噬，少部分的也被他们的敌人所占据。他们昔日的荣耀只有在那些吟游诗人的歌曲中才偶有记载。

　　残存下来的矮人由他们原本居住的地方南迁。矮人们因为锻造的欲望，而在群山中散居。有些矮人转向西行，进入了天行者山脉，有许多在两界山附近定居；但是，一些最有冒险精神的矮人继续向东走，最后选择了寂静山脉作为家园。他们发现了来自遥远的过去的关于魔法的艺术与科技的秘密，那就是火与毁灭的魔力。

　　在矮人和精灵的文明起起落落的同时，人类文明也在发生着巨变。在庞培平原的人们建立了都市，建造了船只，开辟了道路，并且由以撒统治。其中的一位贵族名叫伊甸，他是治理麦格城的欧洛的弟弟。伊甸开始去研究邪恶的力量，并且发现了永生的秘密。终于，伊甸在他血腥的奇袭下夺取得以撒的王位，并且更深入的研究着邪恶力量。

　　其它的城主因为害怕伊甸的邪恶力量便组成了联军，与他展开了浩大的战争。最后，伊甸被击败了，但是他逃离了庞培平原到了至高山峰，他藏匿在那并且计划着他的复仇。终于，他聚集了他的不死军团，借助一场瘟疫的帮助，他打败了丹尼尔王国。并且从此之后这块地方就被称为伊甸园，在那只有被伊甸的意志所操控的不死生物游荡着。经由此处，邪恶的力量像乌云一样散布到整个世界，从此天工大陆上的死者再也无法轻易得到安息。这就是伊甸遗留下来折磨这个已经不再快乐的世界的遗产。

　　人类与兽人等其他种族交战，而与矮人族成为坚实的同盟关系。矮人教导所有的人类部族如何铸造武器与打造盔甲。矮人和人类之间培养出了深厚的友谊。而在这所有的人类部族中，双尾的流星预言了将会出现一位伟大的领袖，他就是奥创西格玛，后世的人称他为天际王，人类的救世主。在他年轻时，他由独眼巨人的手中救出了矮人王山达。为了报答他的英勇行为，矮人族授与他最强大的战槌风暴之锤。最终奥创西格玛将分裂已久的人类部族彻底统一了起来。奥创西格玛带领着他的部族抵御兽人等其他种族，加上矮人盟友的帮助，他终于在崛起之战中击溃所有的敌人。在十二个部族的旗帜之下，奥创西格玛被带上皇冠，被拥立为皇帝。他的国家介于寂静山脉与不朽山脉之间。奥创西格玛全心全意的忙于开拓他的国土，与人类的敌人进行无数场的战争。至此，诞生了西格玛帝国，在天工大陆上最大、最富裕也是最强的人类国家。

　　在长达四十年的时间中，奥创西格玛明智的治理着西格玛帝国。但是之后他决定将逐渐茁壮的西格玛帝国留给他的后代。在那之后，他就彻底消失了。在接下来的数千年，人类的王国日趋强大，并且以极快的速度发展，但是，他们一直是被强敌环肆的。突然有一天，所有疾病中最可怕的黑死病在西格玛帝国中盛行，夺走了大半人口的生命。邪恶而又强大的兽人趁虚而入，有那么一段时间，西格玛帝国看来像是要毁灭了。但是，后世称为兽人屠杀者的利维坦将军最终还是将兽人们赶走了。利维坦加冕为皇，并在西格玛帝国之上建立了希格玛共和国。
